For the peasant world, the fire ritual once represented the abandonment of the old vintage and the propitiation of the new one. In the villages, on January 16th of each year, small bonfires called “focareddhe” were lit, made with bundles of twigs and dedicated to Sant’Antonio Abate for the necessary blessing. With the passage of time this tradition has increasingly disappeared and for this reason Feudi di Guagnano, with the help of its collaborators, has been re-proposing it in its most original aspect and in the name of the most authentic conviviality for some years.
Music, inevitable fireworks and street food characterize this event in mid-January each year. But the entire neighborhood also participates in the event by offering Salento culinary specialties that are offered free of charge to tourists and inhabitants of the town. The appointment is for Saturday 18 January at 7.30 pm in the area in front of the cellar. In case of rain the event will be held the following day at the same time.
